From HK to Canada
The polar regions, often perceived as barren deserts, resonate with me deeply, feeling almost like a second homeland. They are places of profound learning and discovery here on Earth. Having dedicated decades of my life to the Antarctic Continent and the Arctic Ocean, I’ve held several pivotal positions, like a fellow of the International Arctic Scientific Committee and an expert member of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, that allow me to dedicate my life’s mission and the scientific knowledge I’ve acquired to serving back our society. My foray into polar sciences and exploration was significantly shaped by the Victor and William Fung Foundation.
Coming from a working-class family in Hong Kong, the Fung Scholarship was a beacon during my undergraduate studies. It afforded me the opportunity for a half-year exchange in Kazakhstan, where I delved into Oil and Gas policy and immersed myself in the Russian language. This transformative journey was the foundation upon which I built my pursuit of a Master’s degree in Polar Marine Science at St. Petersburg State University, propelling me into a career in polar research.
The Fung Scholars network has been a cornerstone in supporting my endeavors, notably the “Asian Youth Alpine Mentorship Program.” This initiative is designed to nurture the upcoming generation of polar explorers and alpinists, instilling a sense of adventure and scientific curiosity in our youth. Within this vibrant network, we strive collaboratively to push the envelope of human knowledge into the realms of the unknown.
My gratitude towards the Fung Scholarship is immeasurable; it has enabled me to chase my dreams and fulfill my life’s purpose. The support I’ve received has empowered me to leverage my expertise in science and polar research to contribute back to society in significant ways. To my peers in the Fung Scholars community and visitors to our website, I urge you to embrace every opportunity that this network provides and to reconnect with our natural world. Together, we have the power to extend the frontiers of knowledge and effect enduring positive change on our planet.
