To welcome Fung Scholars who had recently arrived in London for the new academic year, we organised a dinner in China town on 17 September 2015. It was also an occasion to launch the Fung Scholars’ London Chapter, bringing together Fung Scholars’ in the city to make new friends and share experiences.
The event was organised by Chris LAMBERT (FS2012-13, The University of Oxford), Adam KNIGHT (FS2013-14, The University of Oxford)and Hannah CALDWELL (FS2012-13, The University of Oxford). Seventeen people came to the dinner, both current Fung Scholars and alumni. We timed the event to coincide with students coming to London for the new academic year to welcome them to the city, and for those based in London to meet each other and share their experiences. There was a mixture of students and people now working. It was a great chance to find out about the many different ways the Fung Scholarship has supported people, and what people have gone on to do next. Many people have continued their links with China either returning to visit, learning Chinese or working in areas with links with China. We enjoyed some delicious Sichuan dishes and then went to a British pub for a few drinks afterwards.
We hope this event will be the first of many for the London Chapter! We shared the details of the Facebook group with everyone who attended and posted photos to encourage more people to join us for us for future events. We have also encouraged people to suggest things they would like to do to meet up, make new friends, and learn about different cultures.
