About the Event

Written by: Abraham CHEE (FS2015-16, Singapore Management University) & Daniel LIM (FS2015-16, Singapore Management University)

The Fung Scholars Singapore Chapter welcomed the new batch of outgoing scholars who were embarking on their semester abroad on exchange, as well as incoming scholars who were spending the semester in Singapore, and lastly, returning scholars who previously went on exchange.

Daniel began the session with an introduction from everyone present. After which, Daniel and Abraham introduced the participants to the Victor and William Fung Foundation, as well as the background information of the Fung Group. Following which, they shared about the history of the Singapore Chapter and its beginnings. This included an overview of the past activities and future plans of the Singapore Chapter in the upcoming year.

One of the key activities in the 2016 Singapore Chapter’s calendar was the annual Fung Scholars Leadership Conference in Hong Kong, which Daniel and Abraham had the honour of participating in. With the positive takeaways gleaned from their Conference experience, they strongly encouraged the new and returning Fung Scholars to join the next Fung Scholars Leadership Conference to be held in 2017.

After which, Abraham shared about his exchange experience at the University of Washington, in the United States. Building upon this, Daniel shared his exchange experience at Emory University, also in the United States. Aside from sharing exchange and travelling tips with the new Fung scholars, we also shared about the importance of having the right mind-set to embark on a truly transformative exchange experience.

Finally, a bonding activity was conducted for the scholars to mingle around. Such a bonding activity was conducted at a pre-departure gathering, as we wanted to promote more interaction and foster long lasting relationships among our scholars.

Before the pre-departure gathering came to a close, the scholars had sumptuous Korean food for dinner together and networked with one another. It was interesting to hear what the new scholars have planned for their upcoming exchange semesters, such as their travel plans.

All in all, it was a fulfilling event. The Singapore Chapter wishes the best to those embarking on their exchange experience in the upcoming semester.
