About the Event

6 Fung Scholars joined the Famine 30 event organised by World Vision on 9 -10 April 2016 at Aberdeen Sports Ground. The event aims to raise fund for food security projects in areas in need, such as eastern and southern Africa, Syria and neighbouring conflict-affected countries. While the Fung Scholars were fasting, they attended workshops about fighting global hunger and poverty, and were entertained by local singers.

Reflections of the participants

Jennifer PAO (FS2015-16, Hong Kong Baptist University)

This is my first time joining Famine 30 and it is definitely an unforgettable experience. There is one particular activity that we were farmers and had to farm for food. However, drought came all in a sudden and all the crops died. It makes me reflect on how unstable they would be in the developing countries and their hard work does not pay off all the time.

The thirty-hour is also a great time for me to reflect on how lucky I am and raise my awareness on people on the other side of the world. Under globalization, we should not just be aware of our home town but gradually extend our horizon to other countries.

Nancy SO (FS2013-14, City University of Hong Kong)

Through different workshops in the camp, I learnt more about the latest situation of the needy. I then determined to lend a helping hand to the underprivileged by sponsoring a child and supporting a village continuously.

Tracy KAN (FS2012-13, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology)

The event encouraged me to put myself in others’ shoes to feel and understand their situation. Each of us could contribute to help the unprivileged, no matter in terms of voluntary work or monetary support.

Josy LAI (FS2010-11, City University of Hong Kong)

Kelvin LEE (FS2008-09, The Chinese University of Hong Kong)

Try not to underestimate what we can do as a whole. This is the power of love that can definitely shorter distances among all of us and change the world.

STAY HUNGRY N YOU WILL BE Full!
