Calling all Fung Scholars!

We are excited to announce our call for contributors and editors for the upcoming Issue 27 of the Fung Scholars Network Newsletter! This issue marks the Fung Foundation’s 20th anniversary—founded in 2006 to promote leadership through scholarships and research partnerships with universities worldwide. This is your chance to share your insights, experiences, and creativity with our vibrant community.

Theme: Thinking About Sustainability in Systems

In recent years, thinking about sustainability through a systems lens has gained traction. A systems approach to sustainability describes how looking at interconnected parts, like people, regulation, business models, spatial planning, and technology, influences each other, rather than fixing isolated problems one by one.

Example: Conventionally, reducing carbon emissions from mobility is dominated by technical innovations, such as the adoption of more electric vehicles. But we cannot rely on breakthrough technology alone to solve all our challenges! A systems approach goes beyond (but doesn’t exclude) engineering solutions. For example, we can eliminate the need to drive if a market or library is within walking distance of one’s home.

Systems thinking touches on every discipline and profession, and as Fung Scholars, we are uniquely positioned to draw on our experiences across our professional, disciplinary, and geographic contexts. The ambition of this issue is to collect a series of examples of how sustainability is approached across these different contexts, whether you came across them during your Fung Scholars program or afterward. We truly appreciate everyone’s insights!

We are looking for:

Contributors: Share your journey with the FS Network or your stories related to our theme, share how you have encountered “systems thinking” in your job, internship, exchange, research, studies, discipline, or community. If you have, we want you to include photos of sustainability and systems thinking in action.

Editors: Work with your peers to shape and refine their articles to ensure clarity and engagement.

Editor-in-Chief & Graphic Designer:

Robin Albrecht (FS 2021/22, Harvard University)
This issue’s theme has been conceptualized by Robin Albrecht. Robin holds a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University and an undergraduate degree in architectural studies with a minor in urban studies from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Through the Fung Scholarship, he conducted independent research on urbanism in Jakarta and Hong Kong.
