Calling all Fung Scholars!

We are excited to announce another incredible opportunity to be part of the editorial team for the upcoming Issue 27 of the Fung Scholars Network Newsletter! The issue also marks the Fung Foundation’s 20th anniversary, founded in 2006 to promote leadership through scholarships and research partnerships with universities worldwide. This is your chance to share your insights, experiences, and creativity with our vibrant community!

Theme: Thinking About Sustainability in Systems

In recent years, thinking about sustainability through a systems lens has gained traction. It describes looking at how interconnected parts, like people, technology, regulation, and business models, influence each other, rather than fixing isolated problems one by one.

Example: Conventionally, discourse on reducing carbon emissions from mobility tends to be dominated by technical innovations, such as the adoption of more electric vehicles. But we cannot rely on breakthrough technology alone to solve all our challenges. A systems perspective goes beyond (but doesn’t exclude) engineering solutions alone. For example, in urban spatial planning, placing a market within walking distance of a residence eliminates the need for transportation.

Systems thinking touches on every discipline and profession, and as Fung Scholars, we have experience worldwide and across a wide range of industries and institutions. What have you seen in your businesses, schools, and exchanges? This issue seeks examples from your profession, internship, exchange, research, studies, discipline, or community where you consider sustainability in systems. The newsletter’s ambition will be to collect examples and experiences, a unique opportunity we have as Fung Scholars.

Editor in Chief & Graphic Designer:

Robin Albrecht (FS 2021/22, Harvard University)
Robin holds a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University and an undergraduate degree in architectural studies with a minor in urban studies from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Through the Fung Scholarship, he conducted independent research on urbanism in Jakarta and Hong Kong.

We are looking for:

Editors: Work with your peers to shape and refine their articles to ensure clarity and engagement.

Writers: Share your journey with the FS Network or your stories related to our theme, share how you have encountered “systems thinking” in your job, internship, exchange, research, studies, discipline, or community. If you have, we want you to include photos of sustainability and systems thinking in action.

We truly appreciate the valuable insights and experiences you’ve gained throughout your journey—whether through exchange programs, internships, or your current professional pursuits. Our Fung Scholars Community continues to grow throughout the past months, welcoming new members from diverse backgrounds, and we’re excited to continue this journey together. Many of our FS are already making meaningful contributions—driving innovation, advancing their fields, and building supportive communities around the world.

As practitioners across a wide range of industries, we also look forward to hearing Fung Scholars share the latest trends and developments from your professional fields, helping us all gain a deeper understanding of the world and its ever-changing landscape.
