Four Fung Scholars joined a social inclusion forum on “About Identities: Hongkonger, Mainlander, Chinese” on Jan 19, 2016 organised by City Jenga and Chi Sun College. The event was initiated by Vicky KUNG (FS2011-12, HKU), who is a keen supporter of social inclusion initiatives in Hong Kong. Dr. York CHOW, Chairman of Equal Opportunities, together with three other students and guest speakers shared their opinions on this topic. The discussion forum was moderated by Ms. Liz YUEN, former TVB Pearl reporter.
About China Jenga
China Jenga is a social inclusion project funded by Swire Properties and initiated by We Care (www.wecarehk.com), an NGO founded by five university students at HKU, in 2015. The project aims to foster interaction, discussion and understanding among young people in Hong Kong and on the mainland.
About Chi Sun College
The forum is part of Chi Sun College’s (www.chisuncollege.hku.hk) effort to promote intellectual exchange and raise awareness on social inclusion issues at The University of Hong Kong. Chi Sun College has a diverse student-mix, admitting students from Hong Kong, mainland and overseas.
Reflections from the participants
Shirley KO (FS2009-10, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology)
“For the sharing made by the Indian-look young man, Jonathan, he said he treats himself a 100% Hongkonger, but people would never take it seriously. That is the difference between “Civil identity” and “Ethnic identity”. These two words are new to me. Honestly, it is complicated to have an only definition of who we are. Yet, the forum gave me new insights on identity.”
Ross CHEUNG (FS2008-09, Hong Kong Baptist University)
“If the discussion ended with Dr. York Chow’s quotation of ‘concentric circle of control’, I would suggest how and why these ideas were constructed and being reaffirmed through daily life. This is what social scientist may feel interested to know both what, how, and why. Probably, it can be developed as the themes for further discussions.”
